This 8 days tour of South Iceland is like a well written thriller making each day more exiting than the last. The flat deltas of Iceland South shores and the wall of mountains towards the innland plays the main characters where the nature gives you everything between the prestine green hills and violence of the historic eruptions that forever changes the landscapes.

Day 1: Reykjavik sight seeing - Thingvellir - Geysir - Gullfoss - Skálholt

reykjavik.jpgstrokkur.jpg We begin the journey with a visit to City Hall. There we get a first impression of the country and the planned route by viewing a big model of Iceland. For self-catering groups there will be a possibility to buy food in supermarkets. Then we leave the capital eastbound and reach after one hour driving the historic parlament place Thingvellir. Beside of historical information the participants of the tour get also first impressions of the special geological situation of Iceland. thingvellir.jpgFrom here the tour continues to the world famous geysirs in the valley Haukardalur, which gave their name to all other similar hot springs in the world. In addition to the visit of the geysirs an interesting museum invites visitors to get to know more about the unique geological facts of the area. The tour continues to close located waterfall Gullfoss, the "golden waterfall", which is one of the main tourist attractions of the country. From here the tour leads to the former bishop residence Skálholt, which was more than 700 years the cultural center of the country. We reach our accommodation close to Hella in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Skógar - Skógafoss - Dyrholaey - Vik - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

In the late morning we reach the village of Skógar, where we visit one of the most famous historical museums of the country and also the impressive, 60 m high waterfall Skógafoss. Not far from here come to the bird rocks of Dyrholaey, where we can watch many kinds of birds, such as puffins which are very typical for Iceland. From here the tour continues with a stop at Vik, a little village with a lovely church and a small whool factory, to our accommodation close to Kirkjubaejarklaustur.



Day 3: Skaftafell - Vatnajökull - Jökulsárlon - Höfn

At the visitor center we start to a four hours hiking tour through the national parc with its very special vegetation. At several view points we can enjoy unique views over the huge glacier Vatnajökull and its large sander areas. One of the very special tourist attractions is the waterfal Svartifoss with its unique basalt columns, which is one of the most popular photo spots of the country. In the afternoon the tour continues to the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlon, where a very impressive boat trip between big icebergs is offered in special amphibia-vehicles. Our accommodation will be today close to the little town Höfn.

Day 4: Eldgjá - Landmannalaugar

eldja.jpg Today the journey leads along the south coast westbound again on the ring road until we leave it in northern direction. At noon we reach Eldjá, a large vulcanic crack, which has been created by a hugh vulcanic explosion. This amazing place can be discovered on a interesting walking tour. From here we continue towards the interior of the country. Many river crossings make this part of the journey to an adventurous experience. After a several stops at interesting view points we arrive at our accom-modation in the Landmannalaugar area in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Landmannalaugar - Hella

landmannalaugar.jpg After one and a half hours bus ride through an amazing wild Landscape we reach Landmannalaugar. Because of the very special chemistry of the rocks the mountains appear in fantastic colours wich sometimes look a kind of unreal. After a hiking trip in the area a bath in the hot springs close to the mountain hut is one the unforgetable experiences of the journey. In the evening we arrive at our accommodation close to Hella.

Day 6: Thorsmörk - Hella

Today we are heading to one of the most fascinating landscapes of Iceland - the Thorsmörk area. Just the bus ride itself through a wild landscape with many river crossings make this tour to an unforgetable adventure. At noon we reach the hut of Thorsmörk from where we start after a lunch break to a hiking tour into a wild and unspoiled nature. In the evening we go back to our accommodation close to Hella.

Day 7: Bakki - Vestmannaeyjar - Heimaey - Hella

heimaey.jpg Today we have a visit on the Vestmannaeyjar islands on the program. After half an hour bus ride we reach the Bakki airfield. From here we continue the journey with an airplane. A six minutes flight brings us over to the main island Heimaey. The life here is mainly influenced by fishing industry and the daily fight with forces of the nature. In 1973 a huge volcano eruption destroyed big parts of the town. But the people didn´t give up there home and came back again later on, when the eruption has stopped. Beside of the impressive landscape the very special atmosphere of livelyness makes the visit on the Vestmannaeyjar islands to a very special experience. After the flight back we arrive at our accommodation close to Hella in the late afternoon again.

Day 8: Hveragerdi - Reykjanes - Blue Lagoon - Reykjavik

24.jpg After one hour bus ride we reach Hveragerdi, the town of flowers and greenhouses. Large greenhouses with flowers and vegetables are heated with the water of local hot springs. Even banana trees and other tropic plants are growing here. From here the tour leads to the peninsula of Reykjanes. The tour includes bird rocks, hot springs and little walks within an unique moon landscape created by vulcanic activity. During a visit in a museum of a geothermal power station the visitor learns interesting facts about the use of geothermal energy which is typical for this country. One of the high-lights of this day and surely of the whole journey at all is a bath in the world famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal swimming pool which attracts guests from all over the world. In the early afternoon we reach the capital Reykjavik again. On a sightseeing tour by bus the group members get to know all important tourist attractions of the city and get useful advices how to explore the city later on by them selfs. The tour ends today at the accommodation in Reykjavik.
